Breaking: The Mauritius Church has an agreement with bicycle shop Joop Zandberg in Grou : your rented (racing) bike and e-bike will be brought to our church - and picked up again. You can contact Joop Zandberg yourself for this; for summers or holidays we advise you to reserve the bike(s) in time. More info: https://www.joopzandberg.nl/verhuur/
Our guests can store all their bicycles and e-bikes for free, safely and dry in our church tower .
Hiking trails
Jirnum-Old Chimney
We walk this short half-hour round - about 3 kilometers - almost every day. Good for the bones and mind. You walk from our church past the farm where skater and world champion Atje Keulen-Deelstra lived. On the left, on the other side, you see the famous AutoDrop Factory of Jirnsum. At the Prinses Margriet Kanaal under the viaduct there: there you see the Ouwe Schouw on the other side, once the most famous hotel in Friesland. The canal is also the border of the municipalities of Leeuwarden and Heerenveen . Did you know that during the Second World War the Canadian troops crossed the bridge here to liberate Jirnsum and Leeuwarden from the Germans? When you walk back you will see donkey Julia standing in the meadow; feel free to give her some grass or a tasty carrot. The same goes for the goats.
Jirnsum-Friens-Jirnsum Tour
From our Mauritius church this round is about 6 kilometers. A large part goes through the meadows of Jirnsum to Friens, a 13th century village where 90 people still live. You pass the beach where on New Year's Day the inhabitants of Jirnsum dive into the river Boarn to celebrate the new year. In Friens , be sure to look at the only national monument of Friens: the church of Friens from 1795. Along the way you will also come across a small playground; ideal when our 5 year old daughter 'walked along' on her bike. If you continue walking you will end up on the Rijksweg again, turn left back to Jirnsum. This seems the most boring part, but here you have a fantastic view over the meadows on both sides. Moreover, you walk on a centuries-old dike (now the Rijksweg), built centuries ago to contain the water of the Middelsee and the river De Boarn. After the FM mast, sit on the bench with a view over the Jirnsum meadows - in the evening you often have a formidable sunset here. A little further on is grand-cafe De 2 Gemeenten ; a great place to reward yourself with a cup of coffee, mint tea, cake and/or a nice lunch. (In the summer we often buy an ice cream here and then enjoy the sunset on the bench in the meadow.)
