FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sleep well when the church bell rings at night?

We turn off our church bell, dating back to 1488, in the evenings when we have guests. So you won't be bothered by the noise. We sometimes get requests from churchgoers to have the church bells rung at night, and that's also possible.

Do you have a washing machine?

Absolutely. Guests staying for a few nights can use our washing machine and dryer free of charge.

Can we also stay 1 night in your church?

Yes, that is possible.

Do you have a bicycle shed?

Guests can store their e-bikes or bicycles in our church tower. Two types of bicycle pumps are also available there.

Can I charge my electric car in Jirnsum (at night)?

Jirnsum / Irnsum offers three charging stations in the village. You can check the exact locations via the ANWB website and app. Two charging stations are within walking distance of the Mauritius Church, according to our guests who have used them. Can we see the entire church from the inside?

Guests who stay with us for extended periods usually receive a tour. This depends on time and availability, and usually happens spontaneously.

Can we bring our pet?

We love pets ourselves, but unfortunately, our accommodation is not suitable for animals, so: no. The Ald Skou dog shelter is located near our church, a 10-minute walk from our church.

Is there anything useful I should bring with me?

Good question. Maybe bring some cash if you want to buy snacks or a souvenir at roadside stalls or farms; there aren't always ATMs. In case of a card malfunction, cash is also handy, of course.

Perhaps some comfortable (thick) socks or slippers. In our church building, we don't wear shoes ourselves, just like in Asia and Eastern Europe (it keeps things nice and clean). If you'd like to tour our church building, we'll ask you to remove your shoes.

In the morning, it's lovely to feel the cool dewdrops on the grass in our church garden. Coffee or breakfast in the garden and the sunshine is wonderful with slippers on!

What time can I check in and out?

Check-in at our church is from 3:00 PM, check-out is at 11:00 AM.

Do you also rent bicycles?

We don't do that ourselves. Bike shop Joop Zandbergen in the nearby boat village of Grou does rent bikes; he'll deliver (and pick up) the bikes and e-bikes to our church for a small additional fee if you rent them from him.

Why don't you serve breakfast as standard as a B&B?

We like to give guests the choice: whether to book breakfast or not. Each of our studios has its own fully equipped kitchen for those who want to prepare their own meals. You can order breakfast for just the first morning, on the day of departure—or every morning. Whatever you prefer. We sometimes jokingly say we're actually a BwB (Bed without Breakfast :-) On most booking websites and platforms these days, you'll see options for hotels and guesthouses with and without breakfast.

The new cabinet will increase VAT for hotels and B&Bs to 21% from 2026. Will you follow suit?

Unfortunately, yes; we have to pay the higher VAT to the tax authorities. Businesses and entrepreneurs can receive a business invoice/bill from us, which they can use to reclaim the VAT from the government.

Isn't maintaining a church a lot of work?

Yes! :-)))
