Celebrating a holiday in a church: inspiration & encounters
On a discovery tour of Friesland? Experience local Frisian life and relax in historic surroundings? You can do that in Jirnsum, one of Friesland's oldest villages, in the municipality of Leeuwarden.
The Mauritius Church (1877) is located in the heart of Friesland: in Jirsum. A ribbon and terp village between Leeuwarden, Sneek, Heerenveen and the boat village of Grou. Near the nature reserves Sneekermeer, Pikmeer, National Park De Alde Feanen and De Greidhoeke , a centuries-old cultural landscape with rich terp villages. Jirsum is located on the Boarn river, near the old (and now disappeared) Middelsee, which flowed from the Wadden Sea into the Frisian land.
Our church was set to be demolished after 7 years of standing empty; the last church service took place in 2010. In 2018 and 2019, we started building a residential house in the nave and B&B guest rooms in the church tower.
We zijn ‘beroemd’ om onze steengoede bedden - daar hebben we niet op bespaard. Je ligt immers een groot deel van je leven op je buik, rug of zij. Onze kerk-studio's hebben elk een aparte, volledig ingerichte keuken. Borden, bestek, Nespresso koffie-apparaat: alles is er. Het De Kraak appartement heeft zelfs een afwasmachine op de plaats waar vroeger het eeuwenoude orgel stond.
Most of our guests stay for several days in our church - an increasing number even for a whole week to 10 days! Long XL weekends (Fri-Mon) or midweeks (Mon-Fri) are popular. In autumn and winter we also welcome business travelers who often stay with us for 1 night.
In addition to a private kitchen and bathroom, our church studios have a private picnic table and seating in our church garden. Reading in a hammock or drinking a beer on a comfortable recliner is also possible. Feel free to take the cushions from the old church chairs inside.
Our guests often tell us they enjoy the peace our church radiates. And that they experience it themselves. And how the stay 'recharges them creatively'. They are enthusiastic about the comfort of the modern rooms and the authentic atmosphere of the building.
In both church studios, you'll find information folders with tips on which restaurants in the area we often visit and think are worth sharing with our guests. We ourselves also enjoy museums, movies, and cultural outings, so we share those with our guests as well - and on the social media of the Mauritius Church.
In our church library - the living room of De Kraak - you will find a collection of books. Of course, about Friesland and the Netherlands, with plenty of tourist tips. But also about burnout and how to find joy in life and work again. The bookshelf is also specialized in China, Ukraine, and Russia - because we have spent a large part of our private and business lives there.
