Eating in Jirnsum: Where to eat?

"Delicious food," say the Frisians. And that's certainly possible here. Below is an overview of local cafes and restaurants that we enjoy (and frequent).

The 2 Municipalities

The meeting place of Jirnsum – and indeed, of all of Friesland (rumor has it that 50% of Frisians found their partner during a party at De 2 Gemeenten). In this eatery, owned by Jantina and Ricardo, you can relax on the terrace or inside in a traditional Dutch pub atmosphere. The food is delicious and reasonably priced: meat, fish of the day, and vegetarian. Our favorite lunch: the 12-uurtje (12 o'clock snack) with soup, carpaccio, and croquette. Our favorite dessert: the Jirnsum ice cream sundae with eggnog, yum. Next to De 2 Gemeenten is the village snack bar, also called De 2 Gemeenten, with all the well-known snacks from the Netherlands.

Eetcafe open: Tue to Fri 10:00 – 22:00, Saturday 12:00 – 00:00, Sunday 12:00 – 23:00, Monday closed.

Snack bar, Closed on Monday, Tue to Fri 11:30 AM – 7:30 PM, Saturday 11:30 AM – 8:00 PM, Sunday 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM

https://2gemeenten.nl/ also for parties and events (PS: all the famous bands and DJs in the Netherlands have performed in the De 2 Gemeenten party hall – and still do; check their website if you want to have a good dance.)

The Fantasist

Village café De Fantast is dead – long live De Fantast!!! Four apartments were built above this historic café at the end of 2024, but sometimes on weekends the preserved bar and terrace are still open... thanks to village volunteers! They offer, for example, an eel smokehouse or other snacks. Check the website for special events or just pop in. If it's closed, continue walking to De 2 Gemeenten.

The Blue Tent

Everything here is homemade: local and delicious. This was once one of Friesland's most famous truck driver restaurants, serving the tastiest meatballs in the Northern Netherlands. While it still looks the same from the outside, a lot has changed inside. Open Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM – but check the website, as it changes frequently. The chicken skewers and pork tenderloin satay are popular.

Sneekerhof: 't Sluske

Enjoy a delicious meal al fresco by the water or cozy up inside by the marina. Our favorite here is the steak: tender Friesian Angus steak. That alone is why we call this place a restaurant and not a cafe. The "uitmijters" (fried sandwiches) for lunch are also fantastic. You can cycle here from our church along the Princess Margriet Canal, a beautiful route. Or drive if you'd like to enjoy a glass of wine. Vegetarian options are also available: Thai curry with cashew nuts or ravioli!

Open Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 8:30pm.

Route 32 Diner: 'American food with a Frisian twist' at Grou-Jirnsum train station

This restaurant in the former NS station building of Grou-Jirnsum – next to the Heerenveen-Leeuwarden highway – is a cozy culinary surprise: American (top-notch hamburgers) and Beerenburg spareribs are among the dishes on the menu. Route 32 is located next to the N32 highway (!) between the capital Leeuwarden and the sports city of Heerenveen. Just one stop from the Frisian capital (the Sprinter train Leeuwarden-Lelystad via Heerenveen and Zwolle stops here every half hour; on weekends, once an hour). A large selection of burgers (the special lunch hamburger is delicious!) is open from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, open Mondays, closed Tuesdays.
