Monday: Where to eat in Jirnsum?

'Our' eatery in Jirnsum, De 2 Gemeenten, is closed on Mondays. (Makes sense, right? Also its staff needs a day off!) But then the question arises: where can you grab a bite on Monday evening in or around Jirnsum? Many of our B&B guests wonder the same thing; a lot of restaurants in Friesland close their doors on Mondays. But you don't have to fear, here are our top Monday dining tips:

**Barteles Diner at train station Grou-Jirnsum**

Located right at the Grou-Jirnsum NS train station — just off the Heerenveen-Leeuwarden highway — Barteles Diner is a cozy, culinary gem. The menu offers a delightful mix of American (think top-notch burgers) and Asian dishes (don’t miss the Indonesian #rendang!). The owner used to run a restaurant chain in Indonesia, so he definitely knows what’s tasty. We like to call Barteles the expat hotspot of Friesland: it’s a great mix of locals and expats, just one stop away from the Frisian capital, Leeuwarden (the train from Leeuwarden to Lelystad via Heerenveen and Zwolle stops at Grou-Jirnsum).

[Check them out here](https://bartelesdiner.nl/) UPDATE: Due to staff shortages, Bartele's Diner has temporarily reduced its hours and is only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays since the end of August 2024. Please check Bartele's website for the latest opening hours.

**Amicaal** in Grou

Amicaal in Grou has been impressing guests for years, even with new ownership. The kitchen consistently delivers high-quality dishes, even earning praise from seasoned Michelin star diners guests. The quality-to-price ratio is fantastic — expect great value for your money. From local Frisian dishes to Mexican tacos, it’s all delicious! Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options too, and they even serve excellent 0.0 wines for those trendy folks from the Randstad. The terrace is heavenly, and the indoor atmosphere is just as inviting. You really haven’t experienced Grou if you haven’t dined here. Summer dessert tip: strawberries with fresh cream and homemade ice cream (Zomerkoninkjes in Dutch). After that, you might need a double espresso to carry you out—it's that good.

**Stube Oostria in Grou**

We were pleasantly surprised when we dined at this restaurant in July 2024. Oostria cooks schnitzels in an open kitchen—made from veal (which is rare to find in Dutch restaurants!), pork, and chicken. All three were delicious. We were equally impressed by the small salad bar, which was incredibly tasty. The same goes for the roasted potatoes served with the meal. The sautéed mushrooms in tartar sauce and sourdough bread were an excellent choice as a starter. We'll be back to try the Aufschnittplatte for two. Besides the Stube, Oostria also has a terrace (across from Hema) and is open on Mondays from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. www.oostria.nl

**Kromme Knilles in Akkrum**

Inside, you’ll find a cozy eatery; outside, a fantastic terrace along the village’s main street in Akkrum. But most importantly: the food is absolutely delicious, and the service is warm and friendly. Last time we visited, we enjoyed a pan of fresh 'Zeeuwse' mussels (imported from Dutch province of Zeeland) and the spareribs. For starters, we shared the Bleu Mushrooms with blue cheese (technically a main course), and for dessert, we went for Beppe’s Sorbet, hmmm. Do we need to say more? The result: We headed home with happy, full bellies. Our advice: definitely check out this restaurant in Akkrum!

**Picknickers at the Sneekermeer**

Picknickers in Ter Herne is open for breakfast and lunch on Mondays from 10:00 to 18:00. And what a lunch it is! From delightful oysters to salads, meats, fish, and veggie options — you name it. We think they serve the best cappuccino in Friesland, or maybe it’s just the relaxed vibe that makes it taste so good. The terrace is one of the most beautiful and laid-back spots in the heart of Friesland. (If it rains, you can cozy up in the greenhouse.) After breakfast or lunch here, you’ll definitely want to come back another day for dinner—guaranteed! We’ve already tried the lobster...

[Reservations recommended](https://www.picknickers.nl/) UPDATE: In Summer you can lunch Picknickers on Mondays until the last Monday of August.

*We’ve personally dined at all the restaurants we recommend — at least twice, anonymously, with our daughter. We only recommend places in Jirnsum and Friesland that we genuinely love, both for the food and the service. With over 20 years of experience in independent restaurant and hotel reviews in the Netherlands and abroad, including as Mystery Guests for 3, 4, and 5-star hotels/restaurants, we know what we’re talking about. But if you have a different experience at any of our recommended spots, we’d love to hear about it.*
