Autumn: chestnuts, art and little heroes

There's plenty of choice to enjoy autumn: Oranjewoud, modern art, paddle tennis, or a miniature walk. Here are a few examples of what you can do around Jirnsum in autumn.

Orange Forest

Autumn lovers: this is pure bliss. A walk through the autumnal Oranjewoud (It Oranjewâld in Frisian), the royal forests near Heerenveen, a 19km drive from Jirnsum. Nature and culture converge here. Stately country houses nestled among the trees and elegant avenues recall the time when the Orange-Nassaus resided here (since 1644). Click here for the estate walk organized by the State Forestry Commission and download a 12.5-kilometer walking route here.

Oranjewoud is also home to the Belvédère Museum , a museum for modern and contemporary art in Friesland. It was opened in 1984 by Queen Beatrix. You'll find beautiful art collections by Frisian painters there, as well as temporary exhibitions by Dutch and international artists. Check out the website! Oh, and we absolutely love the cappuccino (the café is only open to museum visitors).

Lunch, drinks or dinner are also available at Grand Café 1834 and the Culinary Bistro: Marijke Muoi Wine & Dine, both located in Parkhotel Tjaarda.

Playing padel

There's plenty of walking, cycling, and running to be had in and around Jirnsum, but did you know you can also play indoor padel here? In Grou, just 4k from Jirnsum? The padel center has two courts and is open daily. Padel—a mix of tennis and squash—is the fastest-growing sport in the Netherlands. More information and bookings: https://www.padel-grou.nl/
