Interview with owners Mauritius Church Jirnsum in newspaper Friesland

JIRNSUM - The Friesch Dagblad visited Jirnsum for an interview with us and a tour of our church and B&B. Below you 'll find the highlights of the Dutch newspaper article.

“For several years, Bonnie and Charles had a vacation home in Grou, and they occasionally cycled through Jirnsum. There, they stumbled upon a church for sale—a stroke of luck. ‘We walked in, and I saw the floor and the space, and I thought: wow, you could create something beautiful here,’” Charles Hoedt recalls, referring to the large, ornate stencil that spreads like a flower across the floor of the hall.

A renovation followed—‘my wife did everything; I have two left hands’—and since 2020, two studios in the church have been available for rent. Despite the interior being altered, there are still plenty of hints that the building was once a church. For instance, in the hall, there’s an old church pew and a restored antique safe. There’s also an old school map of Paul’s journeys, Hoedt points out as we walk through the church. ‘You’ll find old things everywhere.’

Looking down from here, you can see the garden that surrounds the church. The old church garden with its original trees was also removed. So now, there are young trees and shrubs, including pears, figs, cherries, walnuts, herbs, and tomatoes. ‘We want to bring the church garden back to life,’ says Hoedt.

Despite all the work done, the couple is still bursting with plans. They want to make the church tower accessible to the public and are exploring possibilities with a group of students. Beneath the building lies a large basement—and below that, the original basement—waiting to be investigated. Additionally, the clock needs restoration, and Hoedt is working through the village archive to obtain the original building plans to determine how best to preserve the property.
