New hiking trail Jirnsum through farmland to Grou

#kuierpad Hurray, Jirnsum has a new hiking trail! You can walk over dikes and centuries-old farmland to Grou. A Frisian artist designed the pedestrian bridge for the new hiking trail.

On Friday 24 January 2025, the B&W of the municipality of Leeuwarden will officially open the new walking path with a festive opening ceremony. The path can already be tested and walked. We from the Mauritiuskerk B&B already strolled around on the dike and say: it is beautiful, what a view, you feel the history of the ancient Frisian landscape.

The walking path between Jirnsum and Grou is an initiative of volunteers and residents of the villages Jirnsum, Grou and Reduzum, according to the website Jirnsum.com . "A long-standing desire to be able to walk more through farmland connected them." Farmers enthusiastically cooperated on the new walking path.

Villages: walking tour wish

The desire is great to make a closed walking tour in the future over and between the villages Jirnsum, Friens, Reduzum, Idaerd and Grou. Together the villages are also known as 'Leeuwarden-Zuid'. The municipality of Leeuwarden has 36 villages and hamlets in addition to the city, according to Wikipedia . More than 1/4 of all 123,000 inhabitants of the municipality live in one of these villages.

The walking path is intended for villagers, residents of the municipality and visitors to the central Frisian region, which often presents itself as the heart of Friesland. "Walking can mean a lot to people. A walk every day often brings peace and a good feeling."

It is important that walkers of the new walking path adhere to the rules. For example, dogs are absolutely prohibited because of the stress that dogs can cause to grazing cattle and for the peace of meadow birds. Pets such as dogs can also easily transmit diseases to cattle.

More farm trails

From Jirnsum you could already walk to the village of Friens (Jirnsum-Friens loop; 4-5 km), the village of Raerd (municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân, partly on a farm path, 5-7 km), Akkrum (5 km; municipality of Heerenveen) and to the Sneekermeer (Jirnsum-Sneekermeer loop, approximately 10-15 km, with a break for a winter or summer dip in the Sneekermeer :-))).
