Long-term rent: Church Studio’s in the heart of Friesland; Leeuwarden

For long-term rent: Church Studio’s in the heart of Friesland, an apartment in a restored church, with access to the church garden, private entrance, and bicycle storage.

Church Building Description

The Mauritius Church Residence is located in Jirnsum, in the southern part of the municipality of Leeuwarden. Leeuwarden city (14km) and Heerenveen city (19km) are easily accessible by car, public transport, or e-bike path. Jirnsum has a train station (Grou-Jirnsum) where the train from Schiphol Airport stops. Also, the church has its own (Arriva) bus stop (Hervormde Kerk in Jirnsum).

The church, dating back to 1877, was fully restored in 2017/18 and was given a residential function. Since the summer of 2020, a B&B with Studio Apartments has been opened in the restored church tower, catering to tourists, expats and (international) students looking to stay in Friesland and surrounding areas for an extended period.

Rental prices depends on period and circumstances.*

Studio's for rent: Sep/Oct* till April 2024

The Kraak Studio is located on the first floor of the church tower. The apartment has an open bedroom with kitchen (4-burner stove) and a separate bathroom, as well as the church library serving as a living room. The studio is equipped with all modern conveniences (including a dishwasher!). During the renovation, we preserved old elements to give guests/residents the feeling of sleeping in a church. The Kraak Studio used to be the balcony where the 16th-century church organ was located.

The Pelgrim Studio is located on the ground floor of the church tower. The studio has an open bedroom with a small kitchen (2-burner stove), oven, and fridge. De Pelgrim has a separate seating area for two people on an indoor balcony in the studio, above the sleeping area. The Pelgrim Studio is named after the pilgrimage routes that pass by our Mauritius Church: the Jabikspaad (St. Jacob's Path) and the Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route.

Our guests and tenants praise our mattresses and the tranquility, silence, and pleasant atmosphere in our church building. The kitchen has a complete inventory such as cutlery, plates, cooking utensils, oven, and Nespresso coffee machine.

The northern supermarket chain Poeisz delivers groceries to our church, just like Jumbo. More and more restaurants in Jirnsum also offer delivery, including pizzerias, American, Asian, Afghan, and Surinamese restaurants. Every Tuesday afternoon, the mobile fishmonger from Kollom stops at our church square around 13:45. On Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings, you can buy (organic) vegetables, fruits, and dairy products at the organic garden in Jirnsum.

Jirnsum offers various amenities, including a café-restaurant, an eatery, two snack bars, Frits Koopjeshal store, three hairdressers, a massage salon, physiotherapist, football club, kaatsclub (Frisian ball game), yoga club, billiards club, a sustainable nature campsite, mixed choir, community center, a theater hall for 100 people, and a concert hall for 750 people in café-restaurant De 2 Gemeenten. The ice-skating rink in Jirnsum is named after Atje Keulen-Deelstra from Jirnsum, one of the best female skaters the Netherlands has known (a statue and a local museum for the former World Champion are being worked on).

Guests and tenants of Mauritius Church can use the tennis court next to the church, which belongs to the local tennis club Eernsum, for €10 per hour.

Landlady & Landlord of Mauritius Church Residence, Bonnie & Charles: local Frysian & Dutch who lived as students/expats in London, the Baltics, Russia, and China.
